Pantone Pup

Marsala is a wine produced in an area near the Italian city of Marsala, hence the name. It is a wine that comes in many hues depending on the aging process, from a golden tone to a deep red. One of those classifications is the Rubino which has a ruby colored tone made from red grape varieties.

For 2015, Pantone has declared marsala to be the “Pantone color for 2015”. Watch for it showing up in paint colors for the home, cars, as well as in hair color, fabrics, and tinted leathers.  And there will probably be several variations of shades of marsala by the time 2015 winds down. Since 2000, the Pantone Color Institute, headquartered in New Jersey forecasts color trends. They declare a “color of the year” after meeting twice throughout the previous year in Europe with “secret” representatives of various nations’ color standard groups.  As a result they hold the intellectual property rights to their proclaimed color numbers and pigment values and profit there from. Considered the authority on color, when Pantone speaks, people listen; well fashion designers listen and people follow. One could look at it like it’s providing a harmonious world-wide color; instead of viewing the world through rose-colored glasses for 2015 it will be viewed through marsala-colored glasses.

For fashion, the color marsala is more than a ruby color, it’s a deep, nearly brown-red. It’s a heavy color, one might think of fall and winter apparel but the fashion predictors claim this color will be a significant part of the spring and summer, 2015 fashion collections.

Spring and summer fashion utilizing this color will most likely not be solid versions of this weighty color but rather be in the form of trims, tinted laces, as well as accent pieces (think bows, ties, light weight fashion accessories, such as scarves). The color will be found in patterned fabrics, plaids,  florals, and polka dots giving the apparel a lighter more spring and summer feel.

Fall and winter will bring us more solid colored pieces of marsala.  Leather jackets will be constructed of marsala in a solid whereas, fabric jackets will see fabrics in solid and trimmed in lighter coordinating trims to soften the harshness. Marsala, despite its dark, almost brooding color is a great accent for other colors such as ecru, mustard, teals, and Caribbean blues. Tone on tone found in brocades will also come alive in marsala. Marsala has a unisex appeal and will work well with male or female fashions.

Marsala is a color very reminiscent of the 1960’s and 70’s fashions so it will be seen in 60’s and 70’s inspired styles (peasant blouses, midi and maxi skirts, altered denims). Watch for classic looks to include jackets and knee high boots in marsala tinted leather paired with a midi skirt with diagonal placed plaid print of off white, marsala and blue. Faded jeans with a marsala tweed jacket, (specked with blues, cream, and muted pink), and marsala ankle boots will be seen on the classy but casual fashionistas. Nature inspired neutrals including moss and olive greens will be the accent colors for marsala focused menswear.

So how does all this play into pet fashions?

Oftentimes, pet fashions follow human fashions, not only in colors and prints but in design.  For the serious pet fashion designers marsala will play a big part in their upcoming collections. So watch for 60’s and 70’s inspired designs with the color marsala incorporated into it. Silks and satins in solid marsala embellished with vintage laces and gold trims will be incorporated for the elegant dresses and gowns. Tone on tone brocades will be found in outerwear such as coats and scarves. Suedes in marsala will play into the male dog’s fashions. Faded denim with marsala tinted, as well as colorful muted trims will be found in nostalgia-cut designs for casual day wear for both sexes.  Solid colored corduroy in this robust color will also be found in casual pet fashions. Carriers will range from marsala tinted embossed leathers to 60’s and 70’s inspired denim day bags.

Though marsala will be the focal point in fashion for 2015 due to its intensity there will also be a flux of casual wear, for both humans and pets, in the muted accent colors for a welcomed break. Florals with the same muted color scheme will help keep things light. For us doggies out there maybe Doggles will come out with some shades that we, too, might view the world from marsala-colored glasses…
